Road to Galle and Cricket

Posted on October 13, 2026 by Abhishek Prahladka

Galle – The fort town is a no-miss place in Sri Lanka and how can I afford to miss Galle which is also home of famous Cricket stadium.

Now, when are you staying at the most beautiful place in Sri Lanka, which is Mirissa, the options to travel to Galle are numerous but as a unconventional traveller, I took the path for which I am known. I took the motor-bike for travel to Galle which from my hotel was approx. 35-36 kms one way and the decision was a no-regret decision.

As an Indian, driving on sub-continent roads and traffic condition is not a matter of concern because of familiar driving conditions and a better one as compared to any city in India. So, my expectation was to have a memorable and comfortable ride, which was indeed a journey to remember for long.

We started the ride early morning after breakfast and fuel was topped up from nearby fuel station which was in Weligama. Morning ride from Mirissa to Galle was a treat on road- sea on one side, narrow lane and cool sea breeze, all made the ride a memorable one and full of joy. Passing beaches of Sri Lanka -Midigama beach, Ahangama Beach,Koggala beach and other beaches made our ride a hopping ride and an un-forgetful ride.

The Galle Fort is on a small hill and its easily accessible. We entered inside Galle fort area and parked our bicycle at the parking slot. There was ample space for parking and without any fees, only requirement is to find fine space for parking because it is a famous tourist area and parking space is almost full.

Galle Fort

Galle fort is an open fort unlikely forts in India, where, forts can be visited from inside and outside. But in Galle Fort, except a museum, everything was on top of the fort for tourists to see. The open canons on top of the fort, standing since years, were narrating history of Galle and at the same time giving glimpse of history to the kids who will only see this weapon in stories or watch in historical movies.

The view of Arabian ocean from top of the fort was breathtaking. Winds and water striking the walls of fort with full force but still the walls of Galle fort standing tall and allowing some time to the visitors to hold the breath for some moments and enjoy the view.
