Galleries of Ankor Wat – Carvings of Indian History

Posted on June 13, 2020 by Abhishek Prahladka

Moving ahead, from the entrance, first gallery of the temple is dedicated to the wall carvings, which are dedicated to the battle of Ramayan and Mahabharat.

This long gallery, where i was took photograph, is on the west side of the temple, which has carvings of Mahabharat battle and it shows the glimpses of an epic battle, which took place long time back.

Now, as per the history of the temple, the construction of Angkor Wat took place around 12th Century and at that time only, the story of Mahabharat was engraved on the wall, which is a clear sign that the battle of Mahabharat took place much before that, since the story of the battle has reached so far without any communication medium at that point of time.

This is a living proof for all those “casual historians” who question existence of Mahabharat epic, and the related incidents which took place long back and than they portray Hindu religion as “Hindu Mythology”. It is not right to judge something by saying it as “myth” if you have not witnessed some events with eyes. If photograph is used as a proof in today world, than these carvings are a kind of old age photograph only.

The figures engraved on wall show the fierce battle of Mahabharat, wherein the warriors were shown fighting with swords, shields, bows and arrows. There were figures of warriors riding on chariots and fighting, one of them is Arjun which is very hard to find amongst the warriors on chariots, but after spending a good time on all the carvings, one can easily make out. The figure of Bhishm Pitamah lying on the arrow bed is also carved on the wall.

Figures of marching army portrays the fiercest part of the battle which can not be compared to any other battle in the world.

The four sides of the temple is surrounded with the galleries which show tales from Ramayan, Mahabharat, Sagar Manthan and other tales from the Hindu religion, which needs lot of time and as per my experience, one day is not sufficient to explore entire Angkor Wat temple, because of its magnificent art work and the amount of knowledge hidden inside it.

However, the time allotted by my ticket was very less to learn and experience in details, may be next time, I will try to bring more information and photographs.
